Upper Mustang, once the independent Kingdom of Lo, is a high-altitude desert landscape that feels more like the Tibetan plateau than the rest of Nepal. The region is tucked behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, creating a unique rain-shadow environment famous for its dramatic red cliffs, ancient "sky caves," and the legendary walled city of Lo Manthang.
Highlights of the Trek
- Lo Manthang: Explore the ancient walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo. Within its walls lie the Royal Palace and three major 15th-century monasteries: Jampa Lhakhang, Thupchen Gompa, and Chodey Gompa.
- Tiji Festival: A three-day ritual celebrating the victory of good over evil. This vibrant festival attracts pilgrims from all over Mustang and is one of the most significant cultural events in the region.
- The Mysterious Sky Caves: Marvel at thousands of man-made caves carved into the sides of sheer cliffs. Some were used for burials, while others served as meditation retreats or living quarters dating back over 2,000 years.
- Trans-Himalayan Scenery: Trek through a desert-like landscape of wind-eroded hills and canyons, with the snow-capped peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri providing a stark and beautiful contrast.
The Forbidden Kingdom
Until 1992, Upper Mustang was entirely closed to foreigners. Even today, it remains a restricted area requiring a special permit to preserve its unique Tibetan-Buddhist culture and Bon traditions. The trek follows the ancient salt caravan route, offering a journey back in time through traditional villages like Kagbeni, Gami, and Tsarang.
Suggested Itinerary
- Jomsom to Kagbeni: Start the trek along the Kali Gandaki riverbed to the gateway of Upper Mustang.
- Kagbeni to Chele: Enter the restricted area and climb into the high desert landscape.
- Chele to Syangboche: Cross several high passes with views of the Annapurna range.
- Syangboche to Gami: Pass through red cliffs and the longest Mani wall in Nepal.
- Gami to Tsarang: Visit the massive white monastery and the royal palace of Tsarang.
- Tsarang to Lo Manthang: Reach the walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo (3,840m).
- Explore Lo Manthang: Visit the monasteries, the King's palace, and the nearby cave civilizations of Chosar.
- Return via Dhakmar: Descend through a different route to see the legendary "red cliffs" of Dhakmar.
Best Season
Upper Mustang is unique because it can be trekked during the monsoon season (June to August) when the rest of Nepal is rainy. The rain-shadow effect keeps it dry. Spring (April to May) is also excellent, especially for the Tiji Festival.
